Michael Asen III, commonly known as Michael Shishman died on 28 July 1330 in the Battle of Velbazhd. His actual year of birth is unknown but is believed to be between 1280 and 1292. He was an energetic and ambitious ruler and led an aggressive but opportunistic and inconsistent foreign policy against the Byzantine Empire and the Kingdom of Serbia, which ended in the disastrous battle of Velbazhd which claimed his life.

Nikola Yonkov Vaptsarov was born in Bansko and trained as a Machine Engineer at the Naval Machinery School in Varna, (this school was later named after him.) Vaptsarov idealized the Communist ideas and took an active part in its movement. He was arrested in 1940 for his involvement in the so-called “Sobolev Action.” He was arrested again in 1942 for organizing the supply of guns and documents for a communist resistance and was sentenced to death and executed on 23 July 1942.
